'Rescue Me' is a great show

I've always loved Dennis Leary, I can listen to him talk about "coffee flavored coffee" all day.  That being said, I don't know why I waited so long to finally watch 'Rescue Me'.  It is easily one of the best shows on television right now.  It blurs the line between comedy and drama, both of which it does well.  This is a show that immediately sucked me in.  The casting is great, the actors are superb and the story telling is done very very well.

I think the genius of this show is it ability to vacillate between drama and comedy utilizing a group of funny characters working in a very real and often depressing job.  It is able to cross from fun sexual story lines, the school teacher that demands sex from Tommy Gavin (leary), to the death of Gavins' son and the ensuing heart wrenching, marriage wrecking drama that ensues.  There's also the incredibly over the top Irish family drama.

Overall, I love this show, its ablility to entertain me, make me laugh, and make me cry is its genius.  When the major networks start talking about sagging ratings, this is why.  Shows like this, hidden on cable, are stealing their audience, not to mention, no one at NBC or the others would ever let this show happen at their network.  They'll learn the hard way.

Quick note: this show reminds me of Learys short lived show on ABC called "The Job".  The Job was extremely funny, a little edgy and of course, cancelled.  The Job may have even contained some of the same actors, I will have to research that.
